The Common Student System (Felles studentsystem, FS) is a study administration system developed for universities, scientific colleges and national university colleges. FS is developed by Unit – The Norwegian Directorate for ICT and Joint Services in Higher Education and Research.
FS is the sole study administration system for universities and national university colleges in Norway. It is utilized by 35 institutions, including all Norwegian universities, all national university colleges, the Police College, the Defense Colleges, and several private colleges as well as the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS) [Samordna opptak]. FS is the only study administration system that supports the NUCAS admissions process.
Presently, FS has more than 4000 active study administration users. In addition there are a large number of applicants who apply through the electronic admissions web, administrative users and teachers who have access to student data through the electronic Teachers Web and Course Planning on the Net (Fagpersonweb and EpN). In addition there are ca. 220 000 students who plan and administer their studies via Studentweb, where they have, among other things, access to their grades.
For higher institutions of learning, FS is one of the most business-critical systems in the sector. All daily administrative work takes place in FS. This means that a day of FS downtime would impact the entire university sector; neither students, applicants, teachers nor administrative staff would be able to do their necessary daily work.
